The Physical Therapist is a key member of the Racing Louisville FC Sports Medicine team and is responsible for delivering high-level physical therapy services to professional athletes in an elite performance environment. This role focuses on injury evaluation, rehabilitation, return-to-play progression, injury mitigation, and collaboration with physicians, athletic trainers, coaches, and performance staff to support player health, safety, and performance.

This is a full-time, year-round position. The Physical Therapist is expected to attend all team training sessions, matches (home and away), team events, and necessary club activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Clinical Care & Treatment
  • Provide comprehensive physical therapy services to Racing Louisville FC players, including evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, re-assessment, and discharge planning.
  • Perform physical therapy services in collaboration with the Athletic Training staff and under the clinical direction of the Team Physician.
  • Evaluate injuries and illnesses and refer players to the Team Physician or outside specialists as appropriate.
  • Develop, implement, and progress individualized rehabilitation and return-to-play programs.
  • Serve as a primary clinical resource in return-to-play decision-making.
  • Provide immediate care for acute injuries and oversee rehabilitation through full return to competition.
  • Conduct baseline and post-injury testing (e.g., ImPACT) and follow established concussion protocols.
  • Monitor players’ physical, mental, and psychological health and refer to appropriate resources as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records in the League-designated Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system (Smartabase).

Injury Prevention & Performance Support
  • Implement injury mitigation strategies, movement screenings, and corrective programming aligned with best practices in elite female athlete care.
  • Collaborate with performance staff on screening, monitoring, load management, and return-to-play protocols.
  • Assist with the development and execution of Emergency Action Plans (EAPs).
Medical Coverage & Travel
  • Provide medical coverage for all required training sessions, matches, and team activities.
  • Travel with the team for domestic and international competitions as required.

Documentation & Compliance
  • Document all evaluations, treatments, rehabilitation progress, and clearance decisions in accordance with League, federation, and regulatory standards.
  • Compile reports as required by the League.
  • Comply with all League medical policies and protocols, OSHA standards (including blood-borne pathogens), and applicable local, state, and federal laws.
  • Support compliance with anti-doping (WADA/USADA), workers’ compensation, informed consent, and medication management requirements.
  • Maintain professional liability insurance.
Administrative & Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain an inventory of physical therapy supplies and clinical equipment.
  • Coordinate care with physicians, athletic trainers, performance staff, mental health providers, and external specialists.
  • Communicate effectively with players, coaches, medical staff, Club personnel, and League stakeholders.
  • Participate in continuing education and departmental meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Club or League.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
  • Master’s of Physical Therapy (MPT) or Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) from an accredited physical therapy program.
  • Successful completion of the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE).
  • Current and valid Physical Therapy license in the State of Kentucky (or ability to obtain prior to start date).
  • Must be in good standing with the applicable state licensure board.
  • CPR certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (or equivalent).
  • Residency trained in Sports Physical Therapy or a closely related specialty.
  • Board Certified Sports Clinical Specialist (SCS) required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a licensed Physical Therapist.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in an elite sport environment (e.g., professional, collegiate, Olympic).
  • Soccer-specific experience strongly preferred.
Preferred:
  • Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).
  • Corrective Exercise Specialization (NASM-CES).
  • Performance Enhancement Specialization (NASM-PES).
Additional Requirements
  • Strong clinical reasoning and decision-making skills in an elite sport environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively under time-sensitive conditions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office).
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and extensive travel as required by the competitive calendar.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to walk significant distances, including up and down stairs, as required throughout the venue, as well as stand, sit, walk, bend, kneel, climb, grasp, stretch, stoop, and reach above head in conjunction with tasks.
Ability and willingness to work in all types of adverse weather conditions (i.e., heat, rain, cold, snow, wind).

SCHEDULE:

This position requires availability during evenings and weekends for Racing Louisville FC training sessions, matches, and related team events.

Racing Louisville FC, also known as Racing, is Kentucky’s top-tier professional women’s soccer team competing in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). Founded in 2021 as an NWSL expansion club, Racing is operated by Soccer Holdings, LLC, the same organization behind Louisville City FC. The Team’s roster features both World Cup winners and national team-caliber players. Racing plays its home matches at Lynn Family Stadium and trains at the Lynn Family Sports Vision & Training Center in Louisville, KY.
